Pope
John Paul II in
Krakow
.
We
begin our tour from the Wawel Hill, where in the Wawel Cathedral John Paul
II said his first mass. From the hill we can see the church where he
worked,
Tyniecka Street
, where he was living while studying in
Krakow
, the quarry, where he worked during WWII, the Sanctuary of St. Sister
Faustina, where he prayed.
On the way to the Old Town, there are two houses where he was staying as a
priest, later as a bishop, also Bishops’ Palace, from which he went
to Rome, and two churches – St. Mary’s and St. Florian, where
he was working as a priest.
This
tour takes two hours and includes a need of transportation around Cracow
(it can be a taxi, car or mini bus - not expensive, because all of the
mentioned places are close to each other).
If
you have more time and want to see all of the places in southern Poland
closely related to Karol Wojtyła we arrange for you a mini bus or car and
take you outside Cracow, to Wadowice and Kalwaria (3 houres
more).
Wadowice, the native,
beloved town of John Paul II. Beautiful, small town proud of its historirical value- here in 1920 Karol Jozef Wojtyla, the Pope, was born. You will visit the house of the Pope, where now there is a museum in the flat on the first floor. The first three rooms belonged to the Wojtylas family. Then only to cross the street and you are in the church where Karol Wojtyla was baptized, served to the Holy Mass, and used to spend long hours on prayer.
Only 20 minutes from Wadowice, there is Kalwaria, one of the most important centres of pilgrimage in Poland. The Sanctuary includes the church built in 1605 and St. Bernard's Monastery. But the biggest attraction are the cross stations built on the slopes of the mountain called Żar. There are 28 stations of the "Paths of Our Lord Jesus Christ", and 24 stations of the "Paths of Our Lady". Kalwaria was the place often visited by the Pope, especially at the time of mourning after his beloved mother and brother.
